With sadness, I report the death of Dr. John Garang, the leader of the SPLM/A (Southern People's Liberation Movement/Army) movement in Sudan. Dr. Garang's leadership over the last 22 years, and especially negotiating the recent peace treaty with the Khartoum government, is noteworthy and important.
On Sunday night, July 31, I had the privilege to be a guest of honor at the SPLM/A celebration in Houston, to commemorate the struggle for the "New Sudan." It was a time of great celebration for the movement, and really a time of great hope for the future. Speakers heaped great praise upon "Dr. John" for his leadership. Little did we all now how important those words actually were.
